| BESR or (Ball Exit Speed Ratio) is the current test method to approve a baseball bat. COLLEGE BALL -- Effective January 1, 2011 ALL colleges will have to use bats that have been tested under and approved with the BBCOR (Ball-Bat Coefficient of Restitution) standard. HIGH SCHOOL BALL -- Effective January 1,2012 all High Schools that follow NFHS rules will also need bats that meet and are approved under the BBCOR standard. Until January 1, 2012, NFHS players are allowed to use any bat that is BESR certified AND passes the ABI test. Does this mean composite IS legal for High School? YES if it has been approved under waiver by the NFHS. Great!..... So what is the ABI test? Accelerated Break-In test. This mean that some bats that were made and passed the BESR tests performed better each time they were used. In essence, the first time you hit the bat was the worst that bat performed and every time you hit after that the performance of the bat improved. The problem was that this performance increase was so dramatic that latter in the bat's life the bat now exceeds the maximum standards set by the BESR test. Bottom line.... it was legal and passed when you bought the bat, latter on it can't pass the same test and is illegal for use. What is the BBCOR standard?BBCOR is the Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution. Make sense? Not to us either, but let me give it my best shot. Instead of measuring the exit speed of the ball after it is batted (BESR), BBCOR measures what happens to the ball and bat upon impact, or the "trampoline" effect. Whenever a bat hits a ball thrown at it, the ball actually compresses on impact.A pitched ball holds a lot of energy that can be seen in those slow camera shots of a ball spinning and speed of the ball. With solid wood bats, you lose a lot of that energy at impact because the ball compresses. The performance after impact it greatly defined by only what energy the wood bat can transfer. With hollow-core aluminum or composite bats, the thin walls "give" a little, typically more in composite, and the ball distorts less and retains its pitched energy and adds to it the power of the bat speed. So instead of the bat defining the result on the ball, you are adding the bat plus some of the pitched energy together to create the resulting distance of the ball. The loss of energy at collision is what BBCOR measures. The less energy lost, the faster the ball speed after it gets launched off the bat. In simple terms, jump up and down on a playground and measure how high you jump. Now jump up and down on a trampoline and see how high you get. Big difference right? Now in this example you are the ball and jumping on the ground is a wood solid bat. The trampoline is a hollow core bat like alloy or composite. In a nut shell the BBCOR standard is going to make all bats hit the ball the same and reduce the trampoline effect on the ball. In essence, all bats, regardless of what they are made of, will hit the same as a solid wood bat and put the performance back into the ability of the player.
